L.F. Herreshoff
Quite a man of the times, by the photograph.
The picture shows a man in his late 30's to early 40's in a sitting or drawing room of a reasonable house.
The picture ledge, rather than a rail is typical of the houses of the 20's and 30's ( I grew up in one ) and the day bed in the background gives me thought that this may even be his study, rather than a drawing room...certainly the bookcase and reading lamp add to the possibility.
The man himself is spare in body with a worksmans attire, almost as though he spent most of his time on the tools rather than behind a desk. It may be a comment only, but he has an outdoor man's complexion and the full beard of a sailor of the period, although it probably needed a trim to get it to Naval standards.
Many thanks to both Rob Male who brought this image back from America with him and Mystic Seaport, the seafaring museum in Connecticut on the eastern seaboard of the USA that holds the LF Herrshoff letters and information and is recognised as the owner of the image.
