The H28's at Cockburn Sound Regatta 2014
Unfortunately I was elsewhere and was unable to attend, Therefore very few images are available to us.
However, I am obliged to John Pierzak who was on the water and passed on a report to me.
Cockburn Regatta.
SoPYC was represented by five boats (Anna, Carina, Eun Na Mara, Karoleeya and Napia of Carrick) in the Classic category of the 2014 Cockburn Regatta. Other boats in the Classic category were local H28 Koomela and FSC classic yacht Acrospire IV.
The KIC Race to Rockingham started well for the SoPYC boats with Eun Na Mara taking on all comers to finish 4th over the line in a fleet of 23, and 1st on Handicap. Other worthy contestants were Karoleeya (9th) and Carina (12th).
Day 1 (Sat 3/Jan)
The first day started with a light breeze for the morning Windward/Leeward race with Eun Na Mara, Anna and Carina leading the way over the line, with Acrospire IV 4th over the line. Great effort by the H28’s. The second Windward/Leeward race in the afternoon was held in a stronger breeze. Eun Na Mara, Acrospire IV and Koomela took the Handicap points. Carina rated a mention in finishing 3rd over line. Good spinnaker work seemed to be the difference in the results.
Day 2 (Sun 4/Jan) Strong 25 knot winds and choppy conditions greeted sailors this morning for two Around the Buoys races. In both the Around the Buoys races the over the line results were 1st Eun Na Mara, 2nd Acrospire IV, with Anna 3rd. Handicap results included the same boats with Koomela, 2nd in the morning race.
All sailors returned to the club in the late afternoon wet and tired after two demanding races in 25-30 knot winds.
Day 3 (Mon 5/Jan) The Long Passage race was held in absolutely perfect conditions for sailing with 15 knot winds and smooth sea in Cockburn Sound. All boats enjoyed their 5 or so hours on the water.
Handicap honours for the Passage race were 1st Koomela, 2nd Karoleeya and 3rd Carina. Day 4 (Tues 6/Jan)
The last day consisted of a short Around the Buoys race in the morning. The race was held in mild winds with Acrospire IV, Carina and Anna filling the Handicap results.
Final regatta Consistency results for the Classic category were 1st Eun Na Mara, 2nd Acrospire, 3rd Anna, closely followed by Koomela, Karoleeya, Carina and Napia of Carrick.
Thanks to Fay for “reserving” a table for the H28’s, all skippers and crew involved in the Cockburn Regatta enjoyed the competitive sailing and post-race discussion with a few beers and reds.
Thanks John for the report

The H28's at the Cockburn Sound Regatta 2013
Lots of fun as the H28's wended their way down to Rockingham for the annual Cockburn Sound Regatta.
The Cruising Yacht Club of WA at Rockingham has revived the traditional event and have thrown a lot of sponsors money at the event to make sure that it is fun for every one, including the sailors.
Apart from the Jib and Main Fleets, the Premier cruisers, Div. One, Two and Three, there was the Classic Fleet, Yep that's us.
Four H28's from SoPYC, one from CYC and Gary Martin's Acrospire. Handicapping had been sorted out thanks to last years queries and the fleet was set for a good tussle.
On the first day, we found ourselves doing windward - leeward races and the effort in this made some of us work a little harder than expected. During the afternoon, the wind picked up and Les Brooker of Nerrima looked upward into bubbles as he broached during a wild rock and roll ride with the spinnaker up. There were rumours of people going over board, but as there have been no confirmed reports, they will stay as rumours.
The second day dawned with the promise of stronger winds on the next day so they sent us out on a passage race where it became a survival effort. They gave us the longest course possible and we had to work our way around the marks out to the northern tip of Garden Island and then down past the island and then backwards and forwards across the sound till we finally saw the mussel gardens and realised we were close to the finish. Local knowledge let Vic Court and Carina slip through during the beginning of the race and with Gary Martins Acrospire way off in the distance, Vic was declared the H28 winner with the rest of us wondering how to nobble him for the rest of the regatta.
Day three (Sunday)was the day we dreaded with BOM predicting a big blow. Not so. A good around the buoys race ensued with a westerly that bent around as the day went on. Navigational errors cost Anna the lead early on and then it was a case of curse Vic and chase the rest. Anna managed to catch all the boats back, but Vic was in the lead again. Too hard to catch.
Jays new sail is working well for him and having regular crew on board was a big bonus to him. He performed very well, as did we all, but handicaps are handicaps and make it hard for you to shine. It was a pity to learn that Mark Walters (Koomela) managed to hit another boat, sprung a couple of planks and retired from racing.
Monday was the last race and it was another "Around the Buoys. Again as the breeze filled in, the boats took off and it was another great racing day. For once we had Acrospire behind us on Anna and Les Brooker was running hot as he actually over took her on the reach across toward the silos. Then reality struck and the big boat took off. A few messy incidents occurred at the marks and a bit of shouting of "Hurry up" at the bigger boats as they passed us to windward.
Then the realisation that it was all over and time for presentations.
Vic Court (Carina) took out the Classic Division of the regatta with Les Brooker (Nerrima) second, Gary Martin ( Acrospire ) third and Jay Lawry (Karoleeya) fourth. John Wright (Anna) came fifth (not without trying) and Mark Walters (Koomela) sixth.
Enjoy the images that comprised the regatta.
An A4 photograph of the Classic fleet members will be available for sale at the Wooden Boat regatta on January the 11th at SoPYC. $ 8.00 for participants
